Empowering Communities

Shahid Hussain Jawadi’s experience in Jacobabad shows how residents can help improve the services their neighbourhood depends on. Working with community organisations and municipal officials, local volunteers addressed water distribution problems, encouraged responsible waste disposal and promoted cleaner shared spaces.
The work combined practical improvements with public participation. Residents discussed blocked drains, organised cleaning activities and shared information about hygiene. After the 2022 floods, a neighbourhood committee helped coordinate relief and identify urgent needs.
The story highlights the importance of community ownership: reliable water and sanitation require both functioning infrastructure and people who can report problems, maintain facilities and participate in decisions. This account is adapted from a HANDS reference story about its work in Jacobabad.
